How to Search for Information on Social Work
How do you get started with your research? First you need a plan.
Before you start, ask yourself these questions:
- What exactly is my topic? Be as specific as possible!
- What type of information am I looking for? Book, article, or something else?
- How much information do I need? A few facts or as much as you can find?
- Do I need scholarly information or not? There are ways to limit to scholarly material.

Searchpath - START HERE
Searchpath is an online self-paced tutorial that can help you learn basic library and research skills. There are five modules:
- Starting Smart - when to use what; types of information
- Keywords/Searching - keywords, combining ideas, limiting or broadening your research
- Finding Books - find e-books, books, videos, theses, and more at Babson Library
- Finding Articles - article databases—get those all important scholarly works
- Citations/Plagiarism - don’t get busted, play it smart!
Take SearchPath to gain an understanding of how the library works, and how to find what you need! Each module takes between 15 to 20 minutes to complete. You can either watch each one in order or mix and match. It's up to you!
