IL at Springfield

Springfield College follows an embedded model of information literacy instruction: that is, information literacy skills are taught in a wide variety of classes across all disciplines and levels-- instead of in a single class at the beginning of a student's college career.

In 2006, the college Curriculum Committee approved the Springfield College matrix of information literacy objectives, which was based on national standards.

Information Literacy is an important part of Springfield College's general education requirements.

Current Programs

ENGL 113 and entry-level instruction

Information literacy instruction for the required ENGL 113 (College Writing) classes and for entry-level courses in all majors focuses on basic skills. If you teach either a College Writing course or a course for students entering your major with a research component, we strongly recommend you include information literacy instruction. You can either request a librarian-led session or your liaison librarian can help you design a lesson you can teach yourself.

Course-specific instruction

Information literacy skills at Springfield College are embedded throughout each major's curriculum, which means that skills are taught at all levels from first-years to graduate/doctoral students. Your liaison librarian is ready to assist you either by leading an information literacy session for your students, or helping you to design information literacy lessons you can teach yourself.

To get an idea of which skills and sessions may be appropriate for your class, please see the information literacy topics page.

Online Tutorials

Students and faculty may also be interested in Babson Library's online tutorials, which complement information literacy instruction.
